Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 13 km southeast of Tulsīpur, Nepal in the afternoon

A very shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Tulsīpur, Lumbini Province, Nepal.
According to India's National Center for Seismology (NCS), the quake hit on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, at 4:50 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Tulsīpur (pop. 39,100) located 13 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Bhinga (pop. 22,000) located 53 km from the epicenter, Balrampur (pop. 77,400) 68 km away, Nepalgunj (pop. 64,400) 71 km away, Bahraich (pop. 182,200) 89 km away, and Birendranagar (pop. 31,400) 95 km away.

Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Gulariyā (pop. 53,100) located 100 km from the epicenter, and Butwal (pop. 91,700) 115 km away.
