4.2 quake 14 May 2:48 am (GMT +4:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred early morning on Saturday, May 14th, 2022, at 2:18 am local time near Faizabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 206 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100, 29 km away), Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000, 36 km away), Jurm (pop. 12,100, 39 km away), Faizabad (pop. 44,400, 73 km away), and Khorugh (pop. 30,000, 94 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
