Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 6 km southwest of Chongoyape, Peru

Peru was shaken near Chongoyape, Provincia de Chiclayo, Lambayeque, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 10 minutes ago, the Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Chongoyape, Provincia de Chiclayo, Lambayeque, Peru, around noon on Friday, September 23rd, 2022, at 12:59 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Chongoyape (pop. 16,100) located 6 km from the epicenter.
In Patapo (pop. 15,300) located 26 km from the epicenter, and Saña (pop. 39,200) 32 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Picsi (pop. 43,600) located 41 km from the epicenter, Ferreñafe (pop. 34,400) 43 km away, Chiclayo (pop. 577,400) 50 km away, Monsefu (pop. 25,700) 56 km away, Lambayeque (pop. 43,700) 56 km away, and Chepen (pop. 42,000) 59 km away.
